2017 Verdad Tempranillo Magnum
2017 started out as a typical growing season in our cool coastal area with some cool foggy summer mornings. On Labor Day weekend the marine layer moved off shore and we experienced a searing heat spell and on one day delivered 115 degrees and San Luis Obispo was the hottest place on earth.
This changed the dynamics of the vintage and quickly bumped up the ripeness, especially in the early varieties like Albariño, Viognier, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo. The Tempranillo had a moderate crop level and was harvested about a month earlier than normal in two different picks.
I used 25% whole clusters in the native yeast fermentation and both punched down and pumped over during fermentation. After fermentation the wine was aged in about one-third new French oak barrels for 18 months.
The resulting wine is supple on the palate that exhibits tart cherries, plums and blueberries with a rich earthiness layered with warm spices, cocoa and hints of licorice.
