2019 Lindquist Family GSM

This wine is 34% Grenache and 33% Syrah, both from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard (aka Slide Hill) in the Edna Valley, and 33% Mourvedre from the Martian Ranch Vineyard in the Alisos Canyon AVA.  Both of these vineyards are Demeter Certified Biodynamic, and this wine would have qualified for that designation had I pursued it.  For the 2020 GSM though, I’ll be adding additional vineyard sources though, so keeping it simple on the label.

2019 was a fairly normal vintage weather wise, and the 3 varietals in this blend were harvested separately:  October 10th for the Syrah; October 11th for the Grenache; and October 16th for the Mourvedre.  The Syrah component was fermented with 50% whole clusters, both the Grenache and Mourvedre were de-stemmed.  All lots were fermented in small open top fermenters with native yeast and manual punch downs.

The wines were aged separately in neutral French oak barrels for the first year…then racked, blended and returned to neutral barrel for another 4 months, so 16 months total time in barrel.  It was bottled without filtration in February 2021.

I love this wine!  It shows all the best characteristics of these 3 varietals when grown in cool climate…forward, juicy, wild cherry from the Grenache…spice and depth from the Syrah…and complex earthiness from the Mourvedre.  Each of these components on their own were special, and the 3 together makes a completely different and delicious blend.

Although this is a wine that would age well, I don’t recommend it.  In fact we’ve bottled it under Stelvin screw cap for easy access and enjoyment over the next couple years.  We like to drink this wine with a light chill, 55° - 60° is perfect, especially during the warmer months!

Cheers, Bob Lindquist
