2022 Verdad Godello

The Godello was harvested on September 10, 2022, during the tail end of a heat wave. This is the first vintage of Godello from Rancho Ontiveros. Rancho de Ontiveros, also known as Tunnel View Vineyard, is located off Dominion Road in Santa Maria Valley. The soils are sandy, silty loam.

The Godello budwood was grafted onto Chardonnay vines from the Wente clone, which were planted on their own roots around 1997. In 2022 we had a cool summer followed by a nine-day heat spell (high 80’s to mid 90’s) in the Santa Maria Valley. Overall, the vintage yields were small and the Godello ripened very nicely. The wine was fermented in two-thirds one-year old French barrels and one third neutral barrels. The wine has aged eleven months prior to bottling.

The wine is pale golden with aromas of hazelnuts, honeysuckle, and spice. It is round and supple on the palate with flavors of apricots, pink grapefruit and lime-curd are framed by subtle spicy notes.
