Martian Vineyard is twenty-acre jewel of a vineyard in the Alisos Canyon AVA and is Demeter Certified Biodynamic. The AVA is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) from the Pacific Ocean and is situated in a transitional region, between the cooler coastal region of Santa Maria Valley and the warmerinland area of Sant Ynez Valley. 

Soils within the Alisos Canyon AVA are primarily derived from weathered sandstone and shale. High calcium content from shale pebbles increases the thickness of the skins of red wine grapes, which in turn increases the color and tannin levels in the resulting wine. High sand content provides excellent drainage for vineyards. The low clay content of Careaga Sandstone soils reduces the uptake of nutrients and reduces the vigor of the vines, resulting in smaller grapes with a higher skin-to-juice ratio than grapes of the same varietal grown in heavier clay soil.

The Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes were both harvested on September 25 and were whole cluster pressed together. After pressing the must was settled for a day and put into neutral French barrels for fermentation and aging. The wine stayed in barrels until bottling.

The wine shows pretty aromas of raspberry and cherries with hints of roses and fresh cut mint. On the palate there’s a creamy mouth feel followed by flavors of raspberries layered with hints of cherries, herbs de Provence and a touch of candied Meyer lemon peel.
