2023 Albarino, Edna Valley
63% Morro View Vineyard
37% Jack Ranch Vineyard
The Albariño was grown in the cool climate Edna Valley, boasting one of the longest growing seasons, from budbreak to harvest, in California. This long growing season is due to the direct ocean influence and cool long summers. Normally at the end of summer the coastal marine layer moves off shore and the high pressure moves inland, bringing some heat with it to ripen the vineyards.
Morro View Vineyard, located in the center of Edna Valley, withs Northwest facing slopes facing toward Morro Bay on rocky, gravelly loam soil with marine fossils overlaying ancient volcanic soils.
Jack Ranch is located on the Western side of Edna valley and has gravelly clay loam overlaying volcanic soil with Northeast facing slopes. The Albariño in this vineyard ripens a bit later and sets a smaller crop because of older vines.
The grapes were harvested in early October after a very long, cool growing season.
The Morro View Albariño was fermented in a temperature controlled stainless steel tank and transferred to neutral barrels after fermentation. The Jack Ranch Albariño was fermented in neutral barrels. The different lots were blended before bottling.
The resulting wine has aromas of lime blossoms and white flowers. Flavors of yellow peaches and pears with notes of citrus, white stone and a hint of bitter almonds. This is a perfect wine as an aperitif, or paired with oysters, shellfish, white fish and a variety of Asian dishes and flavors.
90-92 Points, Vinous (from barrel sample).
