2022 Lindquist Family Grenache
This wine is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah from the Reeves Vineyard in the Edna Valley. This wine also includes the new appellation of San Luis Obispo Coast, which includes all of the cool coastal growing areas of San Luis Obispo County.
2022 was a weird vintage…the last year of a 10 year drought…a kind of normal Summer…a 9 day heat wave that started on Friday of Labor Day weekend…a monsoonal rain in late September…and then nice but cool weather for the rest of the Harvest season. The Grenache was harvested on October 19th, and Syrah on September 28th at an average of 22.8° brix, 3.41 pH and 6.2 acidity.
The two wines were fermented in small open top fermenters with twice a day manual punch downs. They were aged separately in neutral French oak barrels for the first 11 months, then racked and blended before returning to the same barrels for an additional 5 months, so 16 months total.
This is a classic expression of cool climate Grenache, with red fruits and spices in the aromas and racy, fresh flavors. The Syrah adds depth, and a nice hint of magenta to the color. This was bottled without fining or filtration in February 2024. I like to serve this wine with a slight chill at around 60°, especially in the Summer.
