2021 Lindquist Family Roussanne Magnum
Lindquist 2021 Roussanne – Bien Nacido Hillside
This wine is 100% Roussanne from Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. This 5 acre block was planted for us in 1997 with budwood from Tablas Creek, which came originally from Chateau de Beaucastel in the Southern Rhone. It is planted in a little hanging valley on the hillside just opposite our winery.
2021 was a beautiful vintage, cooler than most vintages lately, with a long and balanced growing season. These grapes were harvested on October 11th at 24.5° brix, 3.32 pH and 6.7 acidity…great numbers, if a little riper than I would normally harvest.
The grapes were whole cluster pressed, the juice chilled in tank overnight, then transferred to barrels for fermentation and aging. This was done all in one year old Francois Freres Burgundy French oak barrels, barrels that were used once for Chardonnay. It was aged in these barrels for the first year, then racked, fined and cold stabilized before returning to neutral barrels for an additional 6 months. It was bottled without filtration in June 2023…only 3 barrels, 72 cases were produced.
This is the first Roussanne I’ve made under the Lindquist label. I made this wine for 19 vintages under the Qupé label, so am very familiar with the grapes. The wine has aromas of quince, honey and hazelnuts. It’s a rich wine in the mouth with nice acidity and balance. Put this in the cellar for 10-15 years for maximum enjoyment!
