2024 Sawyer Lindquist Pinot Gris
This wine is 100% Pinot Gris from the Sierra Madre Vineyard in the western part of the Santa Maria Valley. As a point of reference, Sierra Madre is about 6 miles due west of Bien Nacido Vineyard. This vineyard has some historical significance for us as I made Chardonnay from Sierra Madre from 1983 – 1995, and even a couple Pinot Noirs in 1983 and 1984. It’s western locale in the Santa Maria Valley, functions as a very cool growing area. The well drained soils are mostly sandy loam.
This wine was very traditionally made…whole cluster pressed, juice chilled in tank overnight, and then immediately transferred to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation and aging. It was kept on the lees during its 7 months in barrel, and underwent complete malolactic fermentation. Malo softens the crisp acidity, giving the wine more body and richness.
Pinot Gris made in this style aligns closely with Chardonnay, but with a lighter, crisper stance. Perfect as an aperitif, or with lighter dishes and hard cheeses. It is slightly floral with hints of citrus and stone fruit. Bottles under Stelvin for easy access and enjoyment!
